Let \((A,{\mathfrak m})\) be a Noetherian local ring. The authors prove that there is an integer \(t=t(A)\geq 1\) such that for each finitely generated \(A\)-module \(M\) of infinite projective dimension the ideal generated by the entries of the map \(\varphi_i\) is not contained in \({\mathfrak m}^t\) for all \(i>1+\text{depth} A\), where \[ (F_*,\varphi_*): \cdots \longrightarrow A^{n_{j+1}}@>\varphi_{j+1}>> A^{n_j}@>\varphi_j>>A^{n_{j-1}}\longrightarrow\cdots \longrightarrow A^{n_0}\longrightarrow 0 \] is a minimal free resolution of \(M\). This restrictions on the entries of the maps \(\varphi_i\) provide a way to slightly improve Herzog's characterization of modules of finite projective and injective dimension in characteristic \(p>0\). The authors also discuss other homological situations related to these restrictions, including previously known results on the existence of free summands in syzygy modules.
