Let \(N\) be a \(II_\infty\)-factor with trace \(\tau: N\to [0,\infty]\). Its two-sided ideal \(K_N\) is the norm closure of the elements of \(N\) of finite trace. Let \(F^{sa}\) denote the space of self-adjoint operators in \(N\) that are invertible in \(N/K_N\). The noncontractible component of \(F^{sa}\) is denoted by \(F_*^{sa}\). Let \((I+K_N)^{-1}\) be the space of invertible operators in \(N\) of the form \(I+T\), \(T\in K_N\). The main result of this paper is the new theorem 1:. \(F_*^{sa}\) is homotopy equivalent to \((I+K_N)^{-1}\). The corollary of theorem 1: \(F^{sa}_*\) forms a classifying space for \(K^1(X)\otimes R\) \((X\) is a compact Hausdorff space). This result is extended to the standard Hilbert module \(H_A\) over a simple purely infinite \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\) with unit or having a countable approximate identity consisting of projections.
