Let \(A(X)\) and \(F(X)\) denote the free associative and the free Lie algebras on a set \(x\) respectively and \(\gamma:A(X)\to L(X)\) be the linear map denoting the Lie bracketing from right to left. The author characterizes the Lie elements and the elements of \(\text{Ker } \gamma\) using tensor calculus tools and shows that this characterization is equivalent to those of Friedrichs, Dynkin, Specht and Wever.
