There are only a few books that address the processing of digital spaces -- 2D digital image and 3D digital volume data -- in a mathematical rigorous manner; this book is one of them. The author follows the path of strict mathematical definitions, theorems and proofs to discuss fundamental and important digital data and their processing. The methods discussed include boundary/edge detection and extraction, region growing, determining connected regions, boundary tracking, and processing, as a special case, binary images. Most of these methods are quite well known in the fields of image processing, computer vision and pattern recognition; nevertheless, it is quite a valuable contribution to formally study and present modern digital data processing methods. This book should be of interest to professionals and researchers in the areas of computer graphics, scientific visualization, digital image processing and computational geometry.
