The problem of constructing smooth surfaces upon scattered data can be reduced to interpolation or approximation via harmonic, biharmonic and triharmonic operators, which in turn stem from variational criteria for smoothness. The approach is based on solving singular integral equations with Cauchy-type kernels. The application of Cauchy integrals and in particular the Plemelj formulae can be used in constructing analytical or numerical solutions. Moreover, two-dimensional biharmonic and triharmonic problems which have smooth solutions except on given line segments are considered.
