The author considers the nonlinear problem \[ -\Delta u(x)+ V(x) u(x)- \sum^m_{k= 1} q_k(x)| u(x)|^{\alpha_k}u(x)+ \mu\sum^n_{k= 1}r_k(x)| u(x)|^{\beta_k} u(x)=\lambda u(x) \] for \(x\in\mathbb{R}^N\), \(N\geq 1\), and \(u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\setminus\{0\}\). Here \(q_k\) and \(r_k\) are positive functions, \(0< \alpha_1<\cdots< \alpha_m< \beta_1<\cdots\beta_n\), \(\mu\) is a positive parameter, \(V\) is a nonnegative function, and \(\lambda\) is an eigenvalue. This problem generalizes several special cases which have appeared in the literature. Using a variational approach, the existence of multiple solutions for fixed values of \(\lambda\) is established whereas no solutions exist when the parameter \(\mu\) is large enough. The boundedness of the solution set and regularity of the solutions are also derived. These results are consequences of an abstract setting with technicalities too numerous and detailed to mention.
