Representations by polyhedra have attracted considerable attention in recent years. The references can be found, for example, in surveys [\textit{U. Brehm} and \textit{J. M. Wills}, Polyhedral manifolds. In: Handbook of Convex Geometry, P. M. Gruber and J. M. Wills, eds. North-Holland, Amsterdam, 535-554 (1993; Zbl 0823.52014) and \textit{E. Schulte} and \textit{J. M. Wills}, Combinatorially regular polyhedra in three-space. In: Symmetries of Discrete Mathematical Structures and Their Symmetry Groups, K. H. Hofmann and R. Wille, eds. Heldermann Verlag, Berlin, 49-88 (1990; Zbl 0721.51022)]. In particular, there has been great interest in maps with a high degree of symmetry. The aim of this paper is to show by a few examples how the range of possibilities can be greatly extended if one eliminates certain restrictions on polyhedra. These restrictions arose by tradition and have no justification in the context of general theory of polyhedra.
