The paper deals with a variational principle for positive tilt maps. The main idea to establish such a variational principle for positive tilt maps relies on proving that the tilt where the action function takes minimum for various points \((x,y)\) with fixed \((x,x')\) must be less than or equal to \(\pi\). The action function admits a geometrical interpretation as an area of some region. Since most of the papers of Mather on twist maps are based on a variational principle, this implies that a lot of his work applies to positive tilt maps as well.
