In the study of modules over finite-dimensional algebras automorphisms of these algebras play an important role. On the one hand the application of algebra automorphisms often allows to construct new indecomposable modules from given ones, on the other hand, looking at modules which are invariant under a group of algebra automorphisms one can obtain additional structural statements of the algebra. So far, little is known about automorphisms of finite-dimensional algebras in general. The paper under review deals with automorphisms for string algebras. These are certain special biserial algebras, for which all indecomposable modules can be described explicitly, see for instance [\textit{M. C. R. Butler} and \textit{C. M. Ringel}, Commun. Algebra 15, 145-179 (1987; Zbl 0612.16013)]. The main result states that for a basic string algebra \(\Lambda\) each autoequivalence \(\sigma\) of the module category \(\text{mod }\Lambda\) is induced by an automorphism \(\Phi\) of the underlying quiver for \(\Lambda\) (which can be extended to an algebra automorphism of \(\Lambda\)), such that \(\sigma\) and \(\Phi\) induce the same operation on the isomorphism classes of all indecomposable \(\Lambda\)-modules which do not lie in homogeneous tubes of the Auslander-Reiten quiver for \(\Lambda\). Consequences with respect to automorphisms which fix the isomorphism class of a certain indecomposable module are given. The results extend naturally to statements about autoequivalences of module categories for algebras of dihedral type, which were studied by \textit{K. Erdmann} [Blocks of tame representation type and related algebras, Lect. Notes Math. 1428 (1990; Zbl 0696.20001)].
