According to Bernstein's inequality, the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension \(\text{GK}(M)\) of any module \(M\neq 0\) over the Weyl algebra \(A_n\) is bounded from below by \(n\). In order to obtain such a lower bound for any simple affine algebra \(A\), the author [Commun. Algebra 24, No. 6, 1971-1992 (1996; Zbl 0855.16005)] introduced the notion of the filter dimension fil.dim and proved that \[ \text{GK}(M)\geq{\text{GK}(A)\over\text{fil.dim }A+\max\{\text{fil.dim }A,1\}} \] for any finitely generated \(A\)-module \(M\neq 0\). The paper under review presents two applications of this theorem. The first of these shows that the difference of the two sides in the above inequality provides an upper bound for the Krull dimension of a finitely generated \(A\)-module whenever \(A\) is a finitely partitive simple affine algebra with \(\text{GK}(A)<\infty\). The second one, the proof of which occupies most of the paper, establishes the equality \(\text{fil.dim }{\mathcal D}(B)=1\), where \({\mathcal D}(B)\) denotes the ring of differential operators of a regular integral domain \(B\) that is affine over a field of characteristic zero.
