Let \(X\) be a Calabi-Yau threefold (which may be allowed to have canonical singularities) and let \(B\) be an ample spanned line bundle on \(X\). The main results are on the normal generation and higher syzygies of such pairs. Theorem I. \(3B\) is normally generated (i.e. \(S^t(H^0(X,3B)) \to \bigoplus_t H^0(X,3tB)\) is surjective, or equivalently, \(3B\) is very ample and embeds \(X\) as a projectively normal variety) unless \(|B|\) makes \(X\) a finite double covering of \({\mathbb P}^3\). \(2B\) is also normally generated except some cases where \(|B|\) maps \(X\) onto a variety of minimum degree. (Remark: \(mB\) was known to be normally generated if \(m\geq 4\).) Theorem II. If \(h^0(X,B)\geq 5\), \(p\geq 1\) and \(t\geq p+2\), then \(tB\) satisfies the property \(N_p\). In particular, the image of the embedding given by \(|B|\) is an ideal theoretical intersection of quadrics if \(t\geq 3\). Together with results on spannedness by Ein, Lazarsfeld, Kawamata, Oguiso, Peternell and others for an ample line bundle \(A\) on \(X\), these results give some bounds for \(tA\) to be normally generated and/or to have property \(N_p\). In the proof, one takes general members of \(|B|\) iteratively and reduces the problem to similar ones on surfaces and curves.
