The book is devoted to the finite spectrum assignment (FSA) of linear time-delay systems. It gives a comprehensive treatment of all aspects of the FSA approach in the frequency domain. The book consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the delay-time systems, the control strategies and practical issues of their applications. In Chapter 2 four algorithms of FSA for time-delay systems are presented. The first Ichikawa algorithm is derived under the assumption that the system contains distinct poles. The second algorithm extends the first one to systems with multiple poles. The third algorithm deals with multivariable systems and the last one provides asymptotic tracking and regulation of stable FSA systems operating under modelling errors. Chapter 3 is concerned with non-parametric estimation of the process and fitting of transfer function models to the frequency response. Two methods are presented. The first method is due to Åström and the second one is an online frequency response estimation method based on the discrete Fourier transform. Chapter 4 is devoted to the controller design, auto-tuning and adaptation based on the transfer functions. Applications of these methods in process control are demonstrated by simulations and some real-time implementations. The robust analysis of FSA and the robust controller design are considered in Chapter 5. The book presents the state of the art of FSA for linear time-delay systems in the frequency domain and shows certain advantages of FSA over the Smith-predictor approach. It is addressed to senior undergraduate and graduate students in engineering.
