Some new versions of the harmonic analysis uncertainty principle are presented. It is proved that \[ \| f\|_2\leq C\Biggl(\int_{\mathbb{R}^n\setminus E}| f|^2+ \int_{\mathbb{R}^n\setminus F}|\widehat f|^2\Biggr) \] if \(E\) and \(F\) are \(\varepsilon\)-thin and \(\varepsilon\) is sufficiently small. (A set \(Q\) is said to be \(\varepsilon\)-thin if \(| Q\cap D(x,\rho(x))|\leq \varepsilon| D(x,\rho(x))|\), where \(\rho(x)= \min\{1,| x|^{-1}\}\) and \(D(\cdot,\cdot)\) is the corresponding ball.) This fact is used for finding some conditions on bounded functions \(G\) and \(H\) under which the operator \(f\mapsto (H(Gf)^{\wedge})^{\wedge}\) is of norm smaller than 1 (in fact, an explicit estimate for the norm is given). A similar estimate is deduced for compositions of certain operators related to irreducible representations of \(\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\). Finally, the ``uncertainty principle type inequality'' \[ \| u\|_{L^2(E)}\leq c\varepsilon^{1/2}(\| u\|_{L^2}+\| p(D)u\|_{L^2}) \] is proved provided that \(p\) is a polynomial ``hyperbolic in some direction \(e\)'' and \(E\) is a set \(\varepsilon\)-small (in a sense) in the same direction. These results are motivated by and applied to the study of the one-dimensional Anderson model. The latter is given by the random Hamiltonian \(H= -{1\over 2}\Delta+ V\) on \(\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})\), where \((\Delta u)(x)= u(x+ 1)+ u(x- 1)\) and the \(V(x)\) \((x\in\mathbb{Z})\) are independent identically distributed real random variables. The authors revise a part of the work done in [\textit{R. Carmona}, \textit{A. Klein} and \textit{F. Martinelli}, Commun. Math. Phys. 108, 41-66 (1987; Zbl 0615.60098); \textit{A. Klein}, \textit{F. Martinelli} and \textit{J. F. Perez}, Commun. Math. Phys. 106, 623-633 (1986; Zbl 0614.60098)], improving some estimates and indicating alternate approaches to some results. The continuity of the density of states for Bernoulli-type models is studied.
