The authors use the concept of continuous Hilbert space basic functions and the mean square convergence properties of spatial generalised Fourier series in order to propose a new technique of hybrid modal analysis (HMA) for spatial extrapolation of measured vibration responses of linear elastic body under isothermal conditions and vibrations of small amplitude under linear boundary conditions. The presented method of HMA utilises a combination of experimental measured vibration responses and a good numerical approximation of three-dimensional real displacement modes which are the eigenvalue solutions of the analysed linear elastic problem. Starting from a known geometry and a suitable set of modes, it is shown that the measured data can be supplemented with spatial information on the whole displacement field of vibrating body which is correctly represented by an appropriate set of modal based vector fields (Hilbert space). The spatial information is extracted from measured vibration responses by curves which fit a truncated response model for the measured data. As a result of the curve fitting procedure, a number of generalised Fourier coefficient spectra are obtained which (together with the corresponding modes) can be used to predict the responses which were not measured or used in the curve fitting. The proposed method is completely general independently of the material property of studied body. The method has been tested, with very good results, on experimental data measured with a laser Doppler vibrometer on a plexiglas plate excited by a shaker in the frequency domain 25-500 Hz.
