The investigation of existence and propagation of waves along the plane boundary separating two elastic isotropic compressible media (the so-called interfacial waves) has a long history (see Rayleigh and Stonely waves) and is of interest in many areas (seismology, signal processing in electronic devices with surface acoustic waves, and so on). Here the author studies this problem for two pre-stressed compressible elastic media with different material parameters. The secular equation relating the phase speed to material, pre-stress and pre-strain parameters is explicitly derived. The solutions to this equation include as particular cases some previously known results (e.g., surface waves, or conditions for the existence of interfacial waves). Additionally, the author considers the case when one medium is a fluid. Some numerical examples illustrate the theory.
