The local controllability of a dynamical system induced by chemical reactions is studied. The reaction constants are chosen as control parameters, and the general assumption is that there exists at least one positive equilibrium (the coordinates of which have not to be known explicitly). Using a result on local controllability within an invariant manifold [cf. \textit{Z. Varga}, Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 118, 717-723 (1989; Zbl 0689.93006)] a sufficient condition for local controllability is derived which is then applied to various examples of formal chemical reactions.
