Let \(M^n\) be a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. The Laplacian \(\Delta\) is a canonical second order differential operator on \(M^n\), whose leading symbol is given by the metric tensor. The paper under review studies the Schrödinger operator \(H_0 =-\Delta+V\). Conditions on \(V\) are formulated which ensure the essential self-adjointness of \(H_0\). In particular, if \(V\in Q_{\alpha, \text{loc}} (M^n)\), the local Stummel class, and \(V\geq -c\) outside of a compact set, then \(H_0\) is essentially self-adjoint on \(C_0^\infty (M^n)\). In addition, essential self-adjointness is proved for potentials which are strongly singular at a point. The absence of eigenvalues of \(-\Delta+V\) is also studied. This relies on Rellich type identities and generalizes earlier work by the authors, concerned with the case \(V=0\). The results on strongly singular potentials make use of a generalization of the classical uncertainty principle in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) to Riemannian manifolds with a pole.
