A numerical method for the Benjamin-Ono equation (Q1272885)

The paper is devoted to the numerical solution of the Cauchy problem for the Benjamin-Ono equation \(u_t+uu_x-Hu_{xx}=\) where \(H\) denotes the Hilbert transform. The Cauchy problem of an initial-value problem for the corresponding \(2L\)-periodic problem is approximated in the spatial variable for large \(L\). This periodic problem is solved by using the Crank-Nicolson approximation in time and finite difference approximation in space treating the nonlinear term in a standard conservation fashion and the Hilbert transform by a quadrature formula which may be computed efficiently using the fast Fourier transform.
