In the paper the harmonic analysis of Euclidean motion groups of two and three dimensional Euclidean space is applied to the solution of nonlinear convolution equations. More precisely, let \(SE(n)\), \(n=2,3\), be such a group and let ``\(\circ\)'' denote the group law. The equations \[ f(x)= h*h)(x)= \int_{SE(n)} h(y)h(y^{-1} \circ x)dy \] and \(f(x)= (h*\cdots *h)(x)\) are regarded. Here \(dy\) denotes the Haar measure on \(SE(n)\). In Paragraphs 2 and 3 the irreducible unitary representations and the group Fourier transform for the motion groups are recalled. In the next paragraph the authors look for exact solutions in the class of square integrable functions. It is proved that the solutions exist if some additional assumptions are made, among others: \(f\) is a rapidly decreasing function and has unitary diagonalizable Fourier transform matrix (cf. Theorem 4.1.4). Since for a general square integrable function \(f\) solutions of convolution equations may not exist, approximate solutions and corresponding regularization means are discussed in Paragraph 5. In particular, regularization methods using the Schur decomposition and diagonalization are discussed. Several numerical examples are presented.
