This book presents in an unitary manner the basic theory and some recent research concerning the Cauchy problem for higher-order abstract differential equations \[ u^{(n)}(t)+ \sum^{n-1}_{i= 0} A_i u^{(i)}(t)= 0,\quad t\geq 0,\quad u^{(k)}(0)= u_k,\quad 0\leq k\leq n-1,\tag{ACP\(_n\)} \] where \(A_0,A_1,\dots, A_{n-1}\) are linear operators in a topological vector space. The results are exposed in the context of sequentially complete locally convex spaces (SCLCS) or in Banach spaces, resp. Hilbert spaces. Laplace transforms are used as a fundamental tool. The authors start with the basic properties of Laplace transforms and an integrated version of Widder's theorem in SCLSC, and they introduce integrated, regularized semigroups (resp. cosine functions) and exhibit a connection between these notions and abstract Cauchy problems. Next, wellposedness and strong wellposedness of \((\text{ACP}_n)\) are defined and it is established the Hille-Yosida type characterization of strongly wellposed \((\text{ACP}_n)\). Moreover, several types of \((\text{ACP}_n)\) are presented which are not wellposed in a standard sense. The second part of the book is devoted to an investigation of various properties of the propagators of solutions to \((\text{ACP}_n)\), including analyticity, parabolicity, exponential growth bound, exponential stability, differentiability, norm continuity, and almost-periodicity; corresponding characterizations are given. Particularly, it is discussed the case of complete and incomplete second-order equations. The systematic exposition of the abstract theory of \((\text{ACP}_n)\) is accompanied by detailed applications which are illustrated with concrete examples.
