The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical analysis and discussion on the implementation of the method of Monte Carlo configuration interaction. This algorithm is efficient for quantum many-body problems on parallel computers. The underlying method is an application of the linear variational principle using many-body expansion functions. An analysis of the method is given within a parallel environment: efficiency, scaling, and two-tiered approach to parallelism with the algorithm are discussed.
