The paper is devoted to tracking of solution branches of difference schemes for important nonlinear three-dimensional problems related to equilibrium configuration of liquid crystals Newton's method is applied and special attention is paid to finding a few extreme eigenvalues of the corresponding symmetric matrix by a modification of implicitly restarted block Lanczos method. The modification is connected with a special choice of shifts. Interesting numerical examples show that the methods have good perspective at least for the physical problems under consideration. Modified subspace iterations with proper model operators (preconditioners) might be of use as well.
