The author [Some classes of solutions to the Toda lattice hierarchy, Commun. Math. Phys., to appear] finds solutions to the Toda equations which can be expressed in terms of determinants of integral operators. In this paper, he shows that a simple variant yields solutions to the matrix Toda equations. As an application it is given a new proof of results by \textit{M. Sato}, \textit{T. Miwa} and \textit{M. Jimbo} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci., Kyoto Univ. 15, 871-982 (1979; Zbl 0436.35077)].
