A transport equation of mixed type (Q1275327)

The following problem arising from statistical physics is studied \[ Lu= xu_y- yu_x+ \Biggl(- u_{xx}+{x^2\over 4} u-{1\over 2}u\Biggr)= f, \] \[ u(x,1)= g(x),\quad x<0,\quad u(x,-1)= g(x),\quad x>0. \] Existence and uniqueness of the solution \(u(x,y)\), \(x\in \mathbb{R}\), \(y\in [-1,1]\), are proved for a suitable choice of functional space for the given data \(f\) and \(g\) by using variational methods.
