The authors discuss the problem of perfectly matched layers when spherical polar and cylindrical polar coordinates are used and extend Berenger's split field formulation for this purpose. The ideas developed are used to consider an anisotropic lossy uniaxial medium and the results of numerical experiments using a multidomain Chebyshev pseudospectral scheme are discussed for a pulse in a radiating dipole and also for scattering by a sphere and a conducting cylinder of finite height. The results are stated to be satisfactory.
