The following result is attributed by the author to I. Juhász: If \(\beta<\alpha\) are infinite cardinals and \(X\) is a compact space of weight \(\alpha\), then there exists a continuous mapping \(f:X\to Y\) onto a compact space \(Y\) with \(w(Y)=\beta\). Here the author gives another proof of this result. Reviewer's note: The result of the paper appeared first in the article of \textit{B. A. Efimov} [Trans. Mosc. Math. Soc. 14 (1965), 229-267 (1967); translation from Tr. Mosk. Mat. O.-va 14, 211-247 (1965; Zbl 0163.17202)], and then it was generalized by the reviewer in [Vestn. Mosk. Univ., Ser. I 1980, No. 2, 37-40 (1980; Zbl 0455.54002)]. The proof given by the author seems to be almost the same as Efimov's one.
