This paper concerns with some basic principles of variational analysis in a large class of Banach spaces admitting smooth renorms with respect to some bornology \(\beta\). In order to deal with this general setting, appropriate constructions of normals and subgradients in non-Fréchet-smoothed spaces are used, based on slight modifications of \(\beta\)-normals and \(\beta\)-subdifferentials of controlled rank (in the sense of viscosity) introduced by \textit{J. M. Borwein} and \textit{A. D. Ioffe} [Set-Valued Anal. 4, No. 1, 1-24 (1996; Zbl 0858.49015)]. By means of such tools, the authors establish an equivalence between the local smooth variational principle for lower semicontinuous functions, and suitable versions of the extremal principle for nonconvex sets, and enhanced fuzzy sum rule in \(\beta\)-smooth spaces, which is of particular interest for bornologies weaker than the Fréchet one. As an application of this new fuzzy sum rule, a refined sequential representation of approximate normals and subgradients for Lipschitz continuous functions is provided in terms of their viscosity subdifferentials of controlled rank.
