A Banach space \(X\) contains an asymptotically isometric copy of \(c_0\) if there is a null sequence \((\varepsilon_n)\subset (0,1)\) and a sequence \((x_n)\subset X\) so that \(\sup_n(1- \varepsilon_n)| t_n|\leq\left\| \sum_n t_nx_n\right\|\leq sup_n| t_n|\). This notion was introduced by \textit{P. N. Dowling}, \textit{C. J. Lennard} and \textit{B. Turett} in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 200, 653-662 (1996; Zbl 0863.47038)], where they showed that if a Banach space contains an asymptotically isometric copy of \(c_0\), then it fails the fixed-point property for nonexpansive self-mappings on closed bounded convex subsets. On the other hand, a Banach space \(X\) has weak normal structure if for each weakly compact convex subset \(K\) of \(X\) with at least two points there is a point \(x\in K\) so that \(\sup_{y\in K}\| x- y\|= \text{diam}(K)\). Note that a Banach space with weak normal structure has the weak fixed-point property. The main result of this paper shows that if a Banach space \(X\) has weak normal structure, then \(X\) does not contain an asymptotically isometric copy of \(c_0\). As a consequence, every finite-dimensional subspace of \((c_0,\|\cdot\|_\infty)\) and every equivalent renorming of \(c_0(\Gamma)\), \(\Gamma\) uncountable, fail to have weak normal structure. Moreover, every separable Banach space can be equivalently renormed so as not to contain an asymptotically isometric copy of \(c_0\).
