The author studies the notion of stable rank for topological algebras. Partial answers to Swan's problem are obtained. In particular, it is shown that a dense and full Fréchet \(*\)-subalgebra of a \(C^*\)-algebra, closed under \(C^\infty\) functional calculus of selfadjoint elements has the same Bass and topological rank.
