Three notions interplay: \(n\)-shape of compact pairs, proper \(n\)-shape of locally compact spaces and relative \(n\)-shape of compact pairs, the last being introduced in this paper. \textit{B. J. Ball} and \textit{R. B. Sher} [Fundam. Math. 86, 163-192 (1974; Zbl 0293.54037)] have introduced the proper shape for locally compact metric spaces and among other results proved that the equality of proper shapes of two locally compact separable metrizable spaces implies the equality of shapes of pairs consisting of Freudenthal compactification and end of respective spaces. The paper under review studies proper \(n\)-shape and brings, among other statements, that an analogous statement holds true for proper \(n\)-shape over the class of locally compact separable metrizable spaces of \(\dim\leq n+1\) which have metrizable Freudenthal compactification.
