The purpose is to present temporal direct numerical simulations (DSN) of sound emitted by free mixing layers. The study consists of two parts. In part I, the authors use a wave packet model to connect the sound field of large-scale structures in a time-developing mixing layer to the sound field of large-scale structures in a spatially developing mixing layer. The DSN databases for a supersonic time-developing mixing layer are briefly described, and the sound field of a temporally evolving supersonic wave packet is numerically analyzed in a test case. In part II, the authors estimate the emitted sound intensity by using the temporal DSN sound source field and an acoustic analogy. The ultimate goal is to estimate the sound emitted by the spatially developing mixing layer.
