The author proves the following conjecture of \textit{V. I. Arnold} [Russ. Math. Surv. 51, No. 1, 1-47 (1996), p. 38]: Let \(\widetilde Tg_n\) be the space of trigonometric polynomials of degree \(n\) having \(2n\) different real critical values, and let \({\mathcal P}_{2n}\) be the space of all smooth functions on the circle also having exactly \(2n\) different critical values. Then the number of connected components of \(\widetilde Tg_n\) is equal to the number of connected components of \({\mathcal P}_{2n}\). Two other conjectures naturally connected with this topic are enunciated by the author.
