This work deals with shallow shells from a mathematical point of view, the main tool being the functional analysis. In chapter I, the concept of shallow shells is presented, while chapter II constitutes a detailed introduction into Sobolev spaces with functional-analytic theories in the sense of Lagrange and Alumyae. In chapters III and IV, the author treats the solvability problems by a topological way and with the help of a priori estimates, in particular in the case of non-uniqueness of solutions. We mention here also Airy stress functions. Chapter V presents a variational approach to the solvability problems, while chapters VI and VII deal with numerical and analytical methods of solutions. In chapters VIII and IX, the authors examines the problem of stability and global uniqueness of solutions. Finally, chapter X describes a probabilistic approach to the stability of shallow shells. The whole book is a mathematical work which brings many interesting and rich aspects, though rather incomplete from a numerical point of view.
