This first part of this article on the theory of vibrating membranes deals with Euler's paper on the vibrating motion of kettledrums (De motu vibratorio tympanorum) of 1766. The author gives a precise description of Euler's argumentation (in modern notation), the results of which are the differential equation of a transversally vibrating membrane, and solutions of this equation for membranes of different shape (circular and rectangular).
