Unaware of Euler's work of 1766 on vibrating membranes Giordano Riccati published his (incorrect) treatment of drums in 1786. This paper, and the origins of the errors in it, are analysed in detail. In his comprehensive Die Akustik of 1802, \textit{Chladni} reported on these papers, giving some preference to Riccati's incorrect but easy to handle formula for the principal eigenvalue. In 1829 \textit{Poisson} published his complete theory of circular and rectangular membranes which for many decades was considered to be the first successful paper on the subject matter.
