This thick volume is intended to persuade as many first year students at Colgate University as possible to take an introductory course in physics. To get the reader into the world of physics he or she is e.g. told how to get an idea of the size of the sun, how to calculate the frequency of light of a certain wavelength and how to determine the electron charge from the data of Millikan's experiment on a computer. For serious physics students this will not do! It is worth mentioning that modern introductory physics texts already do exist [e.g. \textit{M. Mansfield} and \textit{C. O'Sullivan}, Understanding physics. Wiley (1998; Zbl 0896.00008)].
