It is well known that a partition is completely determined by two smaller partitions known as the \(p\)-core and the \(p\)-quotient. It is also known that the bijection between a partition and its 2-core and 2-quotient provides a combinatorial construction of the basic \(A^{(1)}_1\)-module in its homogeneous grading [see \textit{B. Leclerc} and \textit{S. Leidwanger}, Schur functions and affine Lie algebras, J. Algebra 210, No. 1, 103--144 (1998; Zbl 0989.17018)]. The paper under review extends this work to the affine Lie algebras of type \(A^{(1)}_{n-1}\) and to the twisted affine algebras of type \(A^{(2)}_{2n}\). Also included as applications of the constructions developed for these results are alternative proofs of formulae in \textit{S. Ariki}, \textit{T. Nakajima} and \textit{H.-F. Yamada} [Reduced Schur functions and the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 59, No. 2, 396--406 (1999; Zbl 0929.05086)], and \textit{T. Nakajima} and \textit{H.-F. Yamada} [On reduced \(Q\)-functions, Hiroshima Math. J. 27, No. 3, 407--414 (1997; Zbl 0890.05075)].
