This is a survey paper on finite element methods for nonlinear boundary value problems (BVPs) of elliptic and parabolic type in 1D and 2D with memory effects. This monograph is selfcontained, it provides a brief introduction into the finite element methods, the finite difference methods and the basic concepts of electromagnetic fields. In Sections 2 and 3 nonlinear parabolic problems are discussed in 1D and 2D, respectively, using a scalar hysteresis model. In the 2D case both the cartesian and the axisymmetric settings are considered. A vector hysteresis model is applied for a 1D nonlinear parabolic problem with memory in Section 4 and for a 2D elliptic problem in Section 5. In each section the authors state a physical problem with its mathematical model which leads to the respective type of BVP considered. These physical problems are all from the numerical evaluation of electromagnetic fields in electric machines.
