A new optimal (with respect to the so-called generalized operation functional) adaptive controller for a scalar process (one input and one output) is studied. The controllable process is approximated by a polynomial (its degree is adapted through the processing of the deviations of values of the polynomial from meter readings by regression analysis methods). The shaping of the control itself is brought about for the polynomial process by obtaining the minimum of the functional on a sliding unfixed interval. In investigating the adaptive controller, examples for speed stabilization with a quadratic drag and for holding the pitch angle of a flight vehicle are handled. The corresponding results obtained are compared with the solutions derived on the basis of the tracking system.
