After discussing mapping properties of Newton potential operator and single and double layer potential operators, the authors study endpoint boundary Neumann and Dirichlet problems. The main result proved here is the invertibility of classical layer potential operators on a scale of Sobolev-Besov spaces on Lipschitz boundaries for optimal ranges of indices. Then the corresponding results are extended to general Poisson problems with Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions, and, as application, the authors present an \(L^p\)-based Helmholtz decomposition of vector fields in Lipschitz domains. Some counterexamples show that the results obtained are sharp for Lipschitz domains.
