A reducible 3-manifold is one containing an essential compact orientable surface with non-negative Euler characteristic. A 3-manifold which is not reducible is called simple. Suppose \(M\) is a simple 3-manifold with a torus, \(T\subseteq\partial M\). Suppose Dehn filling, using curves \(\gamma_1,\gamma_2\) on \(G\) to bound disks, leads to a manifold \(M(\gamma_1)\) containing an essential annulus and a manifold \(M(\gamma_2)\) which is reducible. The author proves that \(\gamma_1\) and \(\gamma_2\) have intersection number \(\leq 2\). Other theorems are proved, some under the assumption that \(M\) is hyperbolic.
