Let \((X,\|\cdot\|_X)\), \((Y,\|\cdot\|_Y)\) be Banach spaces with norms indicated. A bounded linear operator \(T:X\to Y\) has the norm \[ \| T\|_{X\to Y}= \sup\{\| T(x)\|_Y:\| x\|_X\leq 1\}. \] The operator \(T\) is said to be a norm attaining operator if there is an element \(x_0\in X\) such that \(\| T(x_0)\|_Y= \| T\|_{X\to Y}\). In the main results of this paper the authors show that: if \((M,{\mathcal M},\mu)\) is a \(\sigma\)-finite measure space then the set of norm attaining bounded linear operators from \(L_1(M)\) into \(L_\infty(0, 1)\) is a dense subspace of \(L(L_1(M), L_\infty(0,1))\) of all bounded linear operators from \(L_1(M)\) onto \(L_\infty(0,1)\). The main theorem is indicated in the paper as being based on an application of earlier results of \textit{E. Bishop} and \textit{R. R. Phelps} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 67, 97-98 (1961; Zbl 0098.07905)], which states that the set of norm attaining bounded linear functionals on \(X\) is a dense subspace of the dual space \(X^*\).
