This paper introduces a special class of left-symmetric algebras in analogy to the filiform nilpotent Lie algebras. A vector space \(A\) over a field \(K\) together with a \(K\)--bilinear product \((x,y)\mapsto x\cdot y\) is called \textit{left-symmetric algebra}, or LSA if the identity \(x\cdot (y\cdot z)-(x\cdot y)\cdot z= y\cdot (x\cdot z)-(y\cdot x)\cdot z\) is satisfied. There are two decreasing sequences of subalgebras of \(A\) defined by \(A^1=A_1=A\) and \(A^{i+1}=AA^i, A_{i+1}=A_iA\) for \(i\geq 1\). The LSA is called \textit{filiform}, if \(\dim A^i=\dim A_i=n+1-i\) and \(A_{n+1}=A^{n+1}=0\) for all \(i=1,\ldots ,n\) where \(n=\dim A\). Any LSA is Lie-admissible, i.e., \([x,y]=x\cdot y-y\cdot x\) defines a Lie bracket. The associated Lie algebra of a filiform LSA is clearly nilpotent. The authors show several properties of such algebras and classify all filiform LSAs of dimension \(n\leq 5\) up to left-symmetric isomorphism. One of the tools is the study of central extensions of left-symmetric algebras.
