The authors consider piecewise polynomial subdivision surfaces, which consist of infinitely many either tri- or quadrilateral patches, but with finitely many irregularities. As a main result, a sharp estimate on the lowest possible degree of the polynomial pieces is given, depending on the smoothness of the underlying subdivision scheme.
