The purpose of this paper is to describe a new scheme for generating variable-resolution, unstructured triangular grids on the sphere that overcomes many problems encountered earlier. The basic concepts are simple and can be exploited in several ways to produce good quality grids that are well suited to both serial and parallel computations.
