Variational perturbation theory is a systematic extension of a variational method developed earlier, in particular, by \textit{R. P. Feynman} and \textit{H. Kleinert} [Phys. Rev. A 34, 5080 (1986)] It converts divergent perturbation expansions for energy levels and free energies of a quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillator into exponentially fast converging expansions for all coupling strength. In the article, this procedure is reformulated and generalized to become applicable to field theories of many-body systems. A set of equations are derived which systematically improve the standard Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation to many-body systems. Comparison of the new procedure with the earlier extension of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation based on the method of bilocal Legendre transformations is carried out.
