This paper is concerned with the following concept: Consider the (French) Ferrers diagram of some partition \(\mu\), where cell \((r,c)\) is removed. Consider the determinant \(\|x_i^{p_j} y_i^{q_j}\|\), where \((p_j,q_j)\) are the cells of this ``holey'' Ferrers diagram. The linear span of the partial derivatives of this determinant is a bigraded \(S_n\)-module \(M_{\mu/r c}\) under the diagonal action of \(S_n\). The authors state and prove characterizing results regarding this module. Moreover, they give conjectures which seem well-supported by computational and theoretical evidence: First, it is conjectured that \(M_{\mu/r c}\) is a direct sum of \(m\) left regular representations of \(S_n\), where \(m\) is the number of cells weakly east and north of the cell \((r,c)\) in the (French) Ferrers diagram of \(\mu\). A number of conjectures describe the Frobenius characteristic of \(M_{\mu/r c}\) in terms of the theory of Macdonald polynomials: It is shown that these conjectures imply surprising identities; in particular, a representation theoretical interpretation of the coefficients appearing in some Macdonald-Pieri rules is obtained.
