The aim of this paper is to study certain subalgebras of the cyclotomic \(q\)-Schur algebras of Dipper, James and Mathas that are analogous to the Borel subalgebras of the \(q\)-Schur algebra and to the Borel subgroups of the general linear group. The authors are motivated by possible connections between cyclotomic \(q\)-Schur algebras and quantum groups. The approach used is first to tackle a subclass of the cyclotomic \(q\)-Schur algebras, namely the \(q\)-Schur\(^m\) algebras of the title, starting with the case \(m=2\). The general case follows from this. The authors note that Scott has introduced Borel subalgebras for arbitrary quasi-hereditary algebras. It is not clear whether the subalgebras of this paper agree with those arising from Scott's construction, but this would have interesting consequences. The paper concludes with the study of tilting modules, and proves that the two (opposite) kinds of Borel type subalgebras are in fact in Ringel duality with each other.
