Limits of \(N\)-soliton solutions on constant backgrounds as \(N\) tends to infinity have recently been constructed for several nonlinear evolution equations: for the Korteweg-de Vries equation by Gesztesy, Kaworski and Zhao [\textit{F. Gesztesy}, \textit{W. Karwowski} and \textit{Z. Zhao}, Duke Math. J. 68, No. 1, 101-150 (1992; Zbl 0811.35122); ibid. Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 27, No. 2, 266-272 (1992; Zbl 0760.35039)], for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation by Renger [\textit{W. Renger}, A new class of soliton solutions for the (modified) Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, Math. Nachr. 202, 125-140 (1999)], and for the Toda lattice by Gesztesy and Renger [\textit{F. Gesztsy} and \textit{W. Renger}, Commun. Math. Phys. 184, No. 1, 27-50 (1997; Zbl 0871.35090)]. In this article, the author studies limits of \(N\)-soliton solutions on an arbitrary background solution of the Toda lattice. This yields a new class of solutions of the Toda lattice. In order to achieve this, an inverse spectral problem for some 1-dimensional Jacobi operators is solved.
