It is an important and delicate problem to construct the Ricci tensor on an infinite dimensional manifold and to study its properties. The author gives the corresponding construction for a free loop group and a central extension of a based loop group. Given a finite dimensional semisimple Lie group \(G\) with Lie algebra \(g\), denote by \(H_0({g})\) the space of left invariant vector fields on the based loop group \(L_e(G)=\{l:[0,1]\to G\mid l(0)=l(1)=e\}\) and let \(\widetilde{L}({g})=H_0({g})\oplus\mathbb{R}\) be its central extension. The author introduces two metrics on \(\widetilde{L}({g})\) and computes the Ricci tensors of the Levi-Civita connections generated by them. In addition, he considers the space \(L({g})\) of periodic functions \(\mathbb{R}\to {g}\) of the class \(C^2\) of period 1, endows it with the metric \[ \langle h,h\rangle_\varepsilon=\int_0^1\|h(\theta)\|^2_{g} d\theta+ \int_0^1\|\dot h(\theta)\|^2_{g} d\theta \] and studies the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding Ricci tensor \(\text{Ric}^\varepsilon\) as \(\varepsilon\) goes to zero. Namely, \[ \lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\sqrt\varepsilon\langle \text{Ric}^\varepsilon h, h\rangle_\varepsilon ={1\over 16}\int_0^1\|h(\theta)\|^2d\theta. \]
